She’s back!! Serena Williams former World No1 billed in the past on this blog as The Queen of Women’s Tennis looks to be hitting form and pretty sharpish at that. Pre US Open analysis at this end stated if she reaches the quarter finals she would have done very well indeed as it takes time to regain form after such a long layoff due to injury. Williams who struggled in the US Open Quarter finals in the first set against Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova managed to show why she was World No1 by accelerating to a 7-5, 6-1 win, which would suggest she is literally finding form during play at this event. . Meanwhile Caroline Wozniacki the current World No1 resisted a fightback from Germany’s Andrea Petkovic to progress 6-1, 7-6 (7-5). Serena Williams now meets Caroline Wozniacki in the semis.
Just looking at the quarter finals with Serena Williams claiming a straight 2 sets victory whereas Wozniacki had to settle for a drawn out 3 set win gives a strong indicator of the possible outcome for the US Open Womens Semi Final. I personally wouldn’t like to bet either way on this one, the result could be surprising to say the least. Former world No1 v current World No1. Williams has won this event, Wozniacki has yet to win a Grand Slam. Now there’s a match, the media will love this one!
The other Quarter finals saw Samantha Stosur win and she now faces unseeded player Angelique Kerber. This is where the unpredicatability lies if either of these two go through to the finals both these players are dangerous with a Capital D with Samantha Stosur showing supreme prowess on hard surfaces. Throw in a wild card player and those are the worst. Basically she’s an unknown she could crack in the finals if she beats Stosur or a win can’t be ruled out and it will certainly make names such as Wozniacki and Williams just a little bit nervous, make no mistake.
The media are saying whover wins the Williams v Wozniacki semi has got the trophy. I’m not so sure about that and haven’t even looked at the betting odds as again I think this is still wide open! The US Open Women’s Tennis Semi Finals are on Saturday
