The Mercury Music Awards were held last night at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane in Central London and supreme talent was rewarded on this night. The Mercury prize is the most coveted award in the UK music industry, chosen by critics and experts on the merit of the music alone, rather than units shifted or hype.

P J Harvey who won this award ten years ago at the pinnacle of her career managed to win it again last night………….that’s something else. She is the first artist to achieve this in the entire history of this music awards event. This West Country girl can count yours truly as a fan back in the day, that’s saying something. The music it has to be said is an acquired taste but once hooked it’s addictive stuff and nothing like your mainstream pop with deep quite intensive lyrics and she can do things with a guitar that makes your hair stand on end.
She writes her own material, can play multiple instruments and she has a unique vocal talent that even now there’s nothing out there that sounds quite like her. Gravelly lows to screaming highs and everything in between. That’s vocal talent and that sort of thing stands the test of time! A well deserved win based on the release of her latest album called “Let England Shake”. She beat off Adele which is even more astonishing and puts things into perspective as to how good she is. She performed live at the event and had this to say after winning the award.

“It’s really good to be here as when I last won 10 years ago on September 11 I was in DC watching the Pentagon burn from my hotel room,”
All the nominees performed at the event including Ghostpoet, Elbow, Tinie Tempah, James Blake, Anna Calvi, Everything Everything, Gwilym Simcock, Metronomy, Katy B and King Creosote & John Hopkins – except Adele, who could not sing because of a chest infection.
