It’s a Serena Williams V Samantha Stosur US Open Final. A closer look!

Serena Williams and Samantha Stosur face each other in the US Open Finals. With The 29-year-old Williams beating the current  world number one Caroline Wozniacki 6-2 6-4 in a pretty conclusive 2 set victory to set up a meeting with Australian tenth seed Samantha Stosur, who defeated the surprise wild seed  Angelique Kerber 6-3 2-6 6-2.

The question onthe mind of  everyone is “Who will win and claim the trophy”

Things that are looked for here are current form, decisiveness of victory in the previous round, the opponent that was beaten in the previous round, historical form and performance in a final, Grand Slam wins, surface performance and preference and last but not least actual world Ranking at that moment in time. Here’s our analysis below:

Serena Williams
Serena Williams

Serena Williams: US
Turned Pro: 1995
Age: 29
Form: After a long lay off is showing a blistering return to her past form as in the undisputed World no1 World Women’s Tennis Champion.
Previous Victory and Opponent Beaten:  Beat the current world No1 Caroline Wozniacki to qualify for the final in a decisive 2 set victory
Historical Form and Performance. Consistent high standard of game play maintained even at Grand Slam final event pressure levels. Return to form has been rapid after a long spell away from tennis due to injury.
Grand Slam Victories: 13 and level with Tennis Legend Billie Jean King
Surface Performance: Loves the man made surface of the US Open and also performs well on grass. Not so keen on clay such as at the French Open but this is probably due to peak form being aimed at for Wimbledon and the US Open rather than earlier on in the season.
World Ranking: Currently Ranked at No28 but former undisputed World No1

Samantha Stosur: Australia
Turned Pro: 1999
Age: 27
Form: On form but a lucky draw against a wild card player for the quarter finals has helped a fair bit in her finals placement.
Previous Victory and Opponent Beaten: Wild Card now ranked  Angelique Kerber but victory took 3 sets with Angelique managing to claim the second set as a victory.
Historical Form and Performance:  A superb Doubles player with 2 WTA Titles to her name and achieved a career solo best of Runner Up at the 2010 French Open beaten by Francesca Schiavone. Previous rounds suggested strongly she was to win the event.
Grand Slam Victories:  2 Doubles and finalist in the 2010 French Open
Surface Performance: Seems to play better on the hard surfaces in preference to grass with clay being her recent forte.
World Ranking: currently World Ranked No 10. Highest ever ranking world No4.
EXTRA: The first Australian to reach the US Open women’s final since Wendy Turnbull in 1977

World ranking aside and looking at these two players side by side it’s  pretty much a no brainer with Serena Williams winning this. It may go 2 sets it could drag on for 3, but either way victory will be hers. Add to that the US Open crowd unlike Wimbledon are pretty vocal in their support and Williams is on home turf and the odds swing even more in her favour.

BUT this is Tennis and Stosur has beaten Williams in the past, she’s reached the finals which says something. The fact she is there and is regardless of rank a very good player indeed and the underdog in this event is sometimes a good place to be with Williams probably being under more pressure than Stosur and just a little bit nervous of her opponent. If Stosur plays anything like she did in the rounds that led up to her being in the 2010 French Open final demolishing massive names on route with cool, fluid and quite terrifying ease, Williams could have some problems here, but Stosur would have to play that well to do that.

Once you reach this sort of level in an event it becomes a battle of the mind as they are both physically fit and have the ability, that’s why they are there,  but it’s who thinks they are going to win, who is more confident, luck on the day and more importantly who wants to win the most…….. that’s where the real game is at, and decides who will claim that trophy!

Who does Famefad want to win? Serena Williams!  Where is our money? Now there’s a question without an answer!
