The US Open Women’s Final with Serena Williams and Samantha Stosur fighting it out to claim the trophy at Flushing Meadows was underway yesterday and one thing that may be learned from this final is “never argue with the umpire”. Maybe a small bit of advice learned not from this event but many others as when this happens you will lose! . Get more on the Serena Williams umpire rant at SKY
In our previous article it was stated on paper it looked to be a Serena Williams win but on closer analysis if the Samantha Stosur ruthless brilliance that was demonstrated at the 2010 French Open surfaced again at these US Open Finals, Serena Williams would have serious problems, and she did. Final score was a 2 sets straight victory to Samantha Stosur of Australia with the final score being 6-2, 6-3, it doesn’t get any more convincing than that. Samantha Stosur is now the first Australian woman to win a grand slam title since Evonne Goolagong in 1980 and the first to win the US Open since 1977. She said: “I’m still kind of speechless. I can’t actually believe I won this tournament!”
According to SKY she also had this to say in an after match interview.
“I felt like I was definitely the underdog going into it, so maybe that made me a little more relaxed going into this match than especially my last grand slam final. I think I was able to draw on a lot of that experience from the French Open”
“I had to believe I had a chance to win. I think obviously having two victories over her in the past definitely helped me feel it was possible.
“I’ve played matches where I feel like I can’t miss a ball, and it’s fantastic – but to do it under these circumstances in this kind of final against a player like Serena, for sure I’m going to think it’s one of the best days of my career.”
Too right! Congratulations to Samantha Stosur on her superb Grand Slam win……….well earned!. Serena Williams is back though and considering how long she has been away did incredibly well to get as far as she did, didn’t think she would get beyond the quarters. Next season could be hers though along with the No1 slot, she wants her Queen of tennis crown back and will not rest until she gets it!
