Melissa George and “A Lonely Place to Die’ Premiere. London!

‘A Lonely Place To Die’ had it’s UK premiere today at The Empire in Leicester Square in Central London and this was a small event more like a photo call than a premiere. This film is being billed as a travel horror/thriller. Melissa George the lead actress in this film along with Edward Speleers and Kate Magowan were at the event.

Melissa George has been in a broad range of films including Dark City (1998), The Limey (1999) and Mulholland Dr. (2001). She’s also appeared in The Amityville Horror (2005) remake, the thriller Turistas (2006), and the vampire horror film 30 Days of Night (2007). She’s not a huge name but I’ve seen her personally in ’30 days of Night’; a bizarre horror and she was pretty good in that one and Mulholland Drive a superb film and Dark City is another slightly odd but decent film. Lets put it this way, I haven’t seen her in a bad film and she’s a looker for sure!

The Plot:A group of five mountaineers are hiking and climbing in the Scottish Highlands when they discover a young Serbian girl buried alive in a small chamber in the wilderness. They face dangerous terrain and become caught up in a terrifying game of cat and mouse with the kidnappers as they try to get the girl to safety. We’ve gone with Empire Mag on this one and they had this to say about the film:

An effective thriller that’s canny enough to avoid genre cliches and boasts a gut-punch worth of edgy menace. Rating 3 stars. Full Review

If her past films are anything to go by this will not be your standard Hollywood fare and a bit off the beaten track and slightly outside the box, the sort of stuff that does it for me, but may not be for everybody. In summary it’s in the worth a look category!

The release date looks to be 9 September in the UK and a later release of November for the US.

The 2011 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is officially now in full swing and has been pumping out film premiere’s like nothing else all this weekend to the extent the words at this end were “where do you start”. This event is dimply massive and is billed as the biggest festival in the global film festival calendar and has spawned many films that have gone on to the Oscars. It opened with a U2 Documentary on Thursday last week. You will see some big names turn up at this event as it progresses throughout the week!

Famefad will be focusing on the bigger premiere’s that feature the more prominent name stars and also some of the smaller offerings that are causing a stir in film circles at the event and are getting the serious thumbs up with regards to a possible Oscar nod in the future!

Machine Gun Preacher is our first offering from this event out of shed loads over the weekend. The film title is to put it mildly intriguing and with names such as Michelle Monaghan and Gerard Butler in the fray this is worthy of a closer look.

Plot:Machine Gun Preacher is an upcoming action biopic film about Sam Childers, a biker preacher-defender of Sudanese orphans.:

Selma Blair and the “Dark Horse” Premiere. Venice Film Festival!

Selma Blair was at the “Dark Horse” film premiere last night at the 68th Venice film Festival along with Todd Solondz. True to the films title the film appears to be shrowded in mystery with release dates not yet known. Trailer for this film is also yet another mystery?

Plot:Based on news reports and a press release from October 2010, the film is about Abe, a 30-something male living with his parents, reluctantly working for his father while pursuing his hobby of collecting toys. To lose his “dark horse” status in the family, he’s also trying to spark a relationship with Miranda, who recently moved back home after a failed literary/academic career. Miranda agrees to marry Abe out of desperation, and things go awry from there. The film stars Jordan Gelber, Selma Blair, Christopher Walken and Mia Farrow. Information courtesy Wiki.

A rumoured end of 2011 release looks possible but is not yet cast in stone. Dark Horse by name and Dark Horse by nature, this film certainly is!

Rowan Atkinson and the ‘Johnny English Reborn’ Premiere. Venice FilmFestival!

A name that hasn’t been seen for a while and that’s Rowan Atkinson. He was at the “Johnny English Reborn” Premiere which was held at the 68th Venice Film Festival. Other names that were present at the premiere included Al Pacino, James Franco and Salma Hayek. Gillian Anderson also stars.

Basically the film has a pop in a comedy style at James Bond, 007 and anything else associated with that film franchise. Yes you’ve guessed it; it’s a spoof type film and billed as a parody! Who better than Rowan Atkinson to pull that one off? A sort of Mr Bean meets James Bond. Sounds a complete disaster and would make a superb film hence why it’s been made. Not sure if there any 3 wheeler Reliant Robins in this film though……….that could be interesting?

In the years since MI-7′s top spy vanished off the grid, he has been honing his unique skills in a remote region of Asia. The film is set for a 7 October2011 release in the UK. Limited information with regards to what the critics think of this production. Personally think this has the potential to be pretty hilarious with malfunctioning gadgets, disastrous affairs with the opposite sex and ‘top secret’ probably not being the word that springs to mind! The original film from way back in 2003 called simply ‘Johnny English’ according to Rotten Tomatoes at best just raises a few chuckles, so is this more of the same?

Gwyneth Paltrow and the “Contagion” Film Premiere. Venice Film Festival!

The Contagion Photo call and Film Premiere were held yesterday at the 68th Venice Film Festival. Gwyneth Paltrow and Matt Damondominated the proceedings at the event. This film is billed as a Horror/Thriller and does sound a good film, a sort of disaster movie with disease undertones focusing on that crazed human fear response called panic which has reached epidemic proportions on a global scale eating into the very fabric of society.

These films are quite chilling when properly done because this can and does happenand the thing is you can’t see the very thing that is causing the chaos, only the end result. . Directed by Steven Sodenbergh and with names including Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Gwyneth Paltrow and Laurence Fishburne. From the ground up this film looks to be a solid production with direction, plot and cast including 2 Oscar winners technically getting on the right track. What’s it all about and is it any good after all that?

Gone with the high brow Independent on this one considering the calibre of people involved with the film and surprisingly they had this too say.

As an action movie, Contagion passes muster. What it lacks is any infection of the subtlety or subtext you’d expect from a filmmaker of Soderbergh’s experience and reputation. Rating 2 stars Full Review:

But then again The Hollywood Reporter doesn’t agree and says this:

With simmering tension and some memorable acting performances by a stellar cast, Soderbergh’s disease thriller is worth catching. Full Review:

ReleaseThe film is scheduled to be commercially released on September 9, 2011. It was originally scheduled for October 21, 2011. That in itself is a good sign that the film is at least worth a look!

Sara Paxton and the ‘Shark Night 3D’ Screening LA!

Sara Paxton and a host of stars were at the film screening of “Shark Night 3D” last night at Universal CityWalk in LA. Other names in attendance included Alyssa Diaz and Dustin Milligan. It’s billed as a horror/thriller.

Every once in a while you get one of those films that just one look at the film title and the film poster raises a bit of a chuckle accompanied by a gentle shaking of the head whilst muttering “B Movie”. Shark Night 3D looks to be one of those films, for me anyway. It’s in 3D, may help, may not, and sounds and looks very similar to the Piranha 3D that met with a not too glowing critical response which was also backed up by slow box office numbers only this time it’s got errr Sharks in it.

Plot

The story revolves around seven male and female college friends from Tulane University who spend a weekend at a lake house near Louisiana’s Lake Pontchartrain. Shortly after their arrival, the group experiences terrifying salt-water shark attacks. Unbeknownst to them, they may have just stepped onto the playing-field of someone’s idea of entertainment. Reviews:

What’s the general vibe on this film? Rotten Tomatoes are slightly above neutral with 57% which is a surprisingly and head scratchingly good start. Out of morbid celebrity blogger curiosity and delving just a little bit deeper a review from the Orlando Sentinel confirms my earlier suspicions as follows:

Seven Tulane students plus two Bayou rednecks plus scores of sharks plus 3D adds up to zero fun in “Shark Night 3D,” the worst movie of the summer, arriving on the last weekend of the summer. Rating 1 star

I think we’ll leave it there! The film is set for a release date of 2 September as in today and comes out at the same time as Apollo 18? If you are into shark gore then this maybe for you. If you like B Movies this could be your thing as well?

Another big name star was at the Venice Film Festival last night for the premiere of the new film by non other than Director Roman Polanski called simply “Carnage”. It’s billed as a black comedy drama. This film stars Kate Winslet who was at the premiere along with Christopher Waltz who also stars, other names at the premiere included Eli Roth, John C Reilly and Bar Rafaeli.

Plot

The film follows two sets of parents (Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly) who meet up to talk after their children have been in a fight that day at school. Doesn’t sound that gripping but it’s a Polanski film so from these simple plot beginnings………………. anything goes.

This film has received mixed reviews leaning slightly more onto the positive side of neutral at the 68th Venice film Festival. Check out an in depth review from Alt Film Guide.
The film has been snapped up by Sony Picture Classics with as yet no firm release date but a wild guess would be at the tail end of this year, at a similar time to the Madonna W.E film.

Madonna at the Venice Film Festival? Was she performing? Errr no, she’s got a film, directed by her and it had it’s premiere last night at The 68th Venice Film Festival, where better, now there’s a headline! A directorial debut from Madonna has got to without a doubt create a bit of a stir and get those critics coming out with noses in the air in a feverish manner. Madonna was at the premiere of her event last night and it has to be said she was looking something else. At first glance at the premiere pics thought it was Kate Hudson had to look ten times. “Stone Me” were the words muttered at this end! Abbie Cornish and Andrea Riseborough were also present who star in this film along with the male stars in the film including Oscar Isaac and James D’Arcy. The Weinstein Company have picked up the US distribution rights to this film, that has got to say something?

You could say this was a big premiere in more ways than one. The film was initally shot in London then Stateside and also in France. So what’s ‘W.E’ all about?

The Plot:

W.E tells the story of two fragile but determined women – Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) and Wallis Simpson – separated by more than six decades. In 1998, lonely New Yorker Winthrop is obsessed with what she perceives as the ultimate love story: King Edward VIII’s abdication of the British throne for the woman he loved, American divorcee Wallis Simpson. But Winthrop’s research, including several visits to the Sotheby’s auction of the Windsor Estate, reveals that the couple’s life together was not as perfect as she thought. Weaving back and forth in time, the film intertwines Wally’s journey of discovery in New York with the story of Wallis (Andrea Riseborough) and Edward (James D’Arcy), from the glamorous early days of their romance to the slow unraveling of their lives in the decades that followed. Some Reviews from the Venice Festival

Mixed reviews on this film. Have gone for the positive ones a couple listed below.

Daily Mail’s Baz Bamigboye gave the film a mostly positive review, saying that “A lot of people will loathe it, simply because it’s been made by Madonna. But if people were to watch it with no knowledge of who directed, they would be pleasantly surprised. They might even find much of it enjoyable.”

Music critic Pete Buchanam from the Chicago Examiner said that “Madonna’s ‘W.E.’ is one of the most pleasant film surprises in years”.

Would like to wish Madonna all the best with this film as I know she has put a lot of work into this, directing as she has found out is very hard work but immensely rewarding when you see the end result.. Film looks set for release and premiere at the back end of this year around December 2011. Box office numbers on this is anybodies guess but will be interesting to say the least?

George Clooney and the 68th Venice Film Festival Day 1 Photo Highlights!

The 68th Venice Film Festival is underway in Italy and this event is an important one in the film festival calendar and pulls in the stars but is not quite as famous as say The Cannes Film Festival nor as big as something like the Toronto Film Festival but it still packs a punch in film circles. A mixture of red carpet photos from Day 1 and also some off red carpet casual paparazzi photos of the stars out and about showing some celebrity style.

Firstly the celebrity sightings by the local paps included Alessandro Benetton, Christoph Waltz, Cindy Crawford, Eli Roth, Ezio Greggio, George Clooney, Li Bingbing, Rande Gerber and Vittoria Puccini. Photos

The first film premiere to open the Venice Film Festival event was the George Clooney directed “The Ides Of March” which also stars the man himself. According to the London Evening standard the film goes something like this.

An ultra-liberal Democratic candidate (Clooney himself) who proclaims unusually honest policies, is caught out having had a one-night stand with Evan Rachel Wood’s pretty young intern who doesn’t know it but she has to have an abortion. All this is made worse by the fact that Ryan Gosling’s idealistic press secretary has just been sacked, knows the secret and is prepared to blurt it out to the press if he’s not reinstated.

In summary this is an intelligent political drama with juicy bits and demonstrates that to get to the very top rung in politics, it can be achieved…………. but it’s very difficult to keep a squeaky clean image by the time you get there, some mud is going to stick as everybody is human!. Originally billed for a end of 2011/Early 2012 release Sony Pictures have decided to release the film earlier with a pencilled in date rumoured to be October 14th. That’s a good sign.
